Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe met Quincy Jones through their shared involvement with an American music foundation – an organization that provided crucial support to jazz and blues musicians in need, helping them with housing, medical care and financial assistance. Their shared commitment brought them together and fostered a friendship based on mutual respect and a love for music, and Prince Mario-Max even flew down to New Orleans to help the Hurricane Katrina victims hands on.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
A wonderful annual surprise were the incredibly personal and kind Christmas cards from Quincy Jones each year – more than seasonal greetings, they represented a cherished connection and a shared passion for music and philanthropy. „There was not one year my father H.H. Dr. h.c. Prince Waldemar, my mother H.H. Dr. Princess Antonia zu Schaumburg-Lippe and myself would not receive a beautiful card from Quincy! It was a true Christmas highlight, as his messages were just heartwarming,“ Prince Mario-Max recalls.
Prince Mario-Max presented Quincy an award along with New York’s Denise Rich, Ivana Trump and Andrew Aga Khan Embiricos at B.B. King’s Jazz Club on 42nd Street in Manhattan – a legendary evening. Another memorable night came with his dear friend Doug Ivanovich, founder of the World Peace One Foundation and Storm Aid, who united Quincy and the Prince at the legendary Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills for a night of laughs, joy and beautiful music; Al Harris and Raquel Sanchez had introduced them to Doug. „Whenever I called Quincy he was the most amazing, uplifting and cheerful sunshine one could talk to – a mentor and advisor, a friend, a trusted Hollywood Royal who helped me start my own Hollywood career. Even though I was born into royalty, he always encouraged me to never stop moving and follow my dreams,“ the Prince says.
Quincy Delight Jones Jr.’s journey began on March 14, 1933, in Chicago’s South Side. He discovered the trumpet at the age of 12 in Seattle, earned a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, toured with the Lionel Hampton Band, with Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Charles, worked in Paris at the Schola Cantorum and as musical director for Barclay Records, and became the first African American to compose music for major Hollywood productions, with scores for films like „The Pawnbroker“ and „In Cold Blood.“ He produced blockbuster albums for Michael Jackson, including „Thriller,“ the best-selling album of all time, and collaborated with Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. A tireless advocate for artists‘ rights, he co-founded the Institute for Black American Music and dedicated himself to education, healthcare and cultural understanding – a life that stands as a testament to talent, perseverance and excellence.
