Millions in a Bank Account? Pope Leo XIV Asks What Wealth Is Really For – and His Answer Surprises Everyone

Millions in a bank account? The question is printed in big white letters right across the Pope’s chest – and Pope Leo XIV smiles, pauses, and answers it himself! In the short reel on his official @pontifex account on Tuesday, 3 November, the Pope speaks straight into the camera, white cassock, pectoral cross, a painted fresco glowing softly behind him. It is his prayer video for November, and it asks the question almost everyone thinks about and almost nobody asks out loud: what is wealth, really?

His answer is a small sensation of common sense. Not necessarily millions in an account, not a huge house, not a shiny new car. Wealth, the Pope says in the caption – published in full in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French and Polish, with a short English invitation to pray together – can be a place in life where you have enough to share with others, where you gather in order to build, and multiply in order to do a greater good. And his prayer for this month: that however great your wealth may be, it becomes your instrument for doing good, for reconciliation and for fraternity. The Polish version is the bluntest of all: use wealth properly, do not give in to the temptation of selfishness, serve the common good and stand in solidarity with those who have less. Around 8,000 likes in the first hours, from about 14.5 million followers – and a one-minute video suddenly feels like the most honest money conversation of the week.

Because he is right, and the words are chosen brilliantly. Gather to build. Multiply to do good. Those are the verbs of every hard-working family, every founder, every saver – and the Pope does not scold them, he completes them. Gathering without building is just storage. Multiplying without a greater good is just arithmetic. Regular readers saw the same warm directness in A Gold Ball and a Blue Pen, when a gold basketball carried a whole lesson about daily training in love, and in He Is Coming Back, when a journey home became the story of the season. This time there is no ball and no journey. There is one man, one camera, and one question that follows you home: not how much do you have, but what is it doing, and who is better off because you have it?

And notice the company the word wealth keeps in this prayer: good, reconciliation, fraternity. A fair wage can reconcile. A forgiven debt can reconcile. A funded project in a struggling neighborhood can reconcile. That is why this little reel deserves its audience far beyond churchgoers. It tells the rich not to be ashamed, and the rest of us not to wait until we are rich: having enough to share can start with a meal, an hour, a skill. Millions in a bank account? The Pope has a better definition – and it fits on a phone screen.
