The pen is blue, the ball is GOLD – and the Pope is signing it with a smile! Pope Leo XIV leans over a shining gold basketball in the Paul VI Hall, writing his name with total concentration while a young woman in a black dress holds the ball steady with both hands. Behind them, the hall’s huge dark bronze wall makes the bright ball glow like a trophy nobody expected to see in the Vatican. The picture leads the post on the Pope’s official @pontifex account on Saturday, 31 October – the eve of All Saints‘ Day – and it might be the most joyful papal sports photo of the year.

And the caption is a little masterpiece. In English, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian, for about 14.5 million followers, the Pope writes that God calls everyone to be a saint, and that every part of life – including athletic endeavors – should help us love God and our neighbor. Then the line everyone quoted: no one is born a champion, just as no one is born a saint. Holiness requires a daily training in love. Within hours the post had passed 14,000 likes, and honestly, who can resist it? A pope, a gold ball, and a lesson every athlete, every coach and every parent instantly understands.
Because he is right, and every sports fan knows it. Champions are not born in the final. They are made at the practice nobody watched, on the ordinary morning when showing up was the whole victory. The Pope simply takes that discipline off the court and into daily life: patience practiced, kindness repeated, love trained like a free throw until it becomes second nature. Regular readers saw the same personal touch in Eye to Eye With the Pope, when one small guest stole a whole Wednesday audience, and in He Is Coming Back, when a journey home became the story of the season. This time there is no journey and no square full of pilgrims. There is just a pen, a ball, and a sentence worth taping to the training-room wall.
Look at the young woman’s face, too. She is not giggling for a celebrity autograph. She holds her team’s ball like it matters, watches the signature appear, and treats the moment with the same seriousness the Pope brings to it. That is the whole message in one frame: sport deserves respect, athletes deserve blessing, and the daily work of training – in love as in basketball – is how ordinary people become extraordinary. All Saints‘ Day begins on 1 November. Its training camp, according to this post, starts today.
November. Das Trainingslager, sagt dieser Beitrag, beginnt heute!
