Inside the Unions With Sean Astin and the Rockettes

Who speaks for America’s performers when the cameras stop rolling? Who looks after their health benefits, and who sits at the table when decisions shape the working lives and financial security of thousands of artists? A new series, Inside the Unions, sets out to answer those questions, and it comes from inside the house. Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe has worked in the industry for 30 years and holds membership in SAG-AFTRA, EQUITY and AGVA, so the world he is opening up for readers is one he has lived in himself.

A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.

The series, also billed as Inside the Industry and presented by Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe with SAG-AFTRA, AGVA and EQUITY, looks at the entertainment industry’s unions, its benefit plans, its leadership structures and its boards of trustees. These are names most audience members never hear. Yet the people on those boards decide how health coverage works, how funds are managed and how performers are protected between one job and the next. The series is coming soon in the Times Square Chronicles.

A health plan run by 40 trustees

Start with the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan, an institution governed by 40 Trustees, split evenly down the middle: 20 Union Trustees and 20 Producer and Management Trustees. That balance is the point. Labor and management sit on the same board, and the plan only works when both sides do the work.

The 20 Union Trustees are Amy Aquino, Jim Bracchitta, John Carter Brown, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, Barry Gordon, David Hartley-Margolin, Michelle Hurd, David Jolliffe, Lynne Lambert, Jodi Long, Richard Masur, John T. McGuire, Arianna Ozzanto, Michael Pniewski, Linda Powell, Ray Rodriguez, Sally Stevens, Ned Vaughn, Tracee Wilkins and Colleen Williams.

The 20 Producer and Management Trustees are Jason Cole, Kristina Fredericks, J. Keith Gorham, James Harrington, Greg Hessinger, Robert W. Johnson, Sheldon Kasdan, Allan Linderman, Steven Loi, Stacy K. Marcus, Diane P. Mirowski, Stephanie Mothershed, Yeerik Moy, Paul Muratore, Marc Sandman, Ted Sinclair, Kim Stevens, Lara Unger, David Weissman and Russell Wetanson.

Forty names is a long list, and that is exactly why the series prints it. Behind a phrase like the Health Plan there are real people with real votes, and performers deserve to know who they are.

The leadership in focus

The series will also explore SAG-AFTRA leadership, including President Sean Astin and Health Plan CEO Michael Estrada, and the wider world of AGVA, including the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.

Sean Astin is known to audiences as a famous actor, but he is also an audiobook narrator who has read classic books in his own unmistakable voice. For Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe, himself an audiobook narrator, listening to Astin read is a particular pleasure, and that shared craft gives the series a personal thread. Astin wrote about the actor’s working life in his memoir There and Back Again: An Actor’s Tale (2004), written with Joe Layden, where he made clear that job security was not to be taken for granted. That one honest line explains why unions and health plans matter so much to the people who rely on them.

Opening night at Radio City

The timing could not be better. Today, at the opening of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the Rockettes of AGVA proved what this industry can bring at its best: joy and glamour, carried by hard work and strict discipline. They mesmerized the audience and held the hall completely. A line of dancers moving as one looks effortless from a seat in the hall. Behind that polish sits a union, a training standard and a group of performers whose professionalism is the real show.

That is the contrast the series wants readers to see. On stage, everything glitters. Off stage, trustees meet, plans are funded and leaders answer hard questions about what members need. Both halves belong to the same industry, and the second half rarely gets told.

What the series will ask

Who are the decision-makers? How do these institutions serve performers? What responsibilities come with leadership in an industry built on artistic talent and professional dedication? What is really going on, and what do the members themselves think? The series will follow the people, the institutions and the decisions, from the dancers and actors and musicians to the board members, the leadership and the members they serve.

Coming soon in the Times Square Chronicles, Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe brings readers Inside the Industry. For anyone who has ever wondered who stands behind the performers they applaud, this is where that story starts.
