There was a head of state in the front row and a champion in a hurry on the court at the Coque on Thursday, as Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg attended the first quarter-final of the Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters 2026, the meeting of two former stars of the women’s game, Germany’s Angelique Kerber and Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig.

Kerber, the defending champion, settled the match in two sets, 6-2, 6-3, conceding only five games on the evening. Anyone who followed her career will recognise the pattern: the deep, skidding returns, the left-handed cross-court shots that open the court like a door, and the flat refusal to donate free points. Puig fought hardest in the second set, stepping in and taking the ball early, the way she did on the famous afternoon in Rio in 2016 when she won Olympic gold for Puerto Rico, but the champion’s consistency kept the door closed.
Afterwards, the Grand Duke congratulated the players on their match and wished all the participants an excellent tournament. The official photograph from the Maison du Grand-Duc shows him centre court between Puig and Kerber, with tournament guests completing the line, everybody smiling on the electric blue surface of the Coque. It is a happy picture, and a telling one: Luxembourg’s new head of state looks entirely at ease in the middle of a sports arena on a Thursday night.
Readers of this paper have watched the new Luxembourg reign assemble itself engagement by engagement this month, from gallery openings to a Red Cross station district visit, always at eye level. A legends tennis night is the lightest entry yet in that diary, and maybe the cleverest. Sport gives a young reign the easiest pictures in the world: real crowds, real applause, and a home crowd that leaves happy whatever the score.
It also connects Luxembourg to a wider royal week of very different registers. In Spain, this paper reported, Felipe and Letizia honoured Isabel Allende at the Premio Planeta in Barcelona, all literature and ceremony. In Florida, Queen Sofia’s Miami gala delivered history and high society. And the season’s social calendar keeps glittering, as our report on the Luxury Gala selling out with 1,500 guests in California showed. Luxembourg’s answer to all that grandeur was beautifully simple: a blue court, two beloved champions, and a Grand Duke applauding from the front row.
One number explains why Thursday mattered to the tournament. Five: the total games the defending champion dropped. Legends events are meant to be relaxed, and Kerber is not relaxed about tennis. Three Grand Slam titles, an Olympic silver medal and a spell at world number one were built on exactly the discipline she brought to the Coque, and players hoping to take her title this week now know the standard they must reach.
There is also a practical dividend that Luxembourg understands very well. A night like Thursday puts the Coque, the Kirchberg district and the Grand Duchy itself into sports pages from Berlin to San Juan, carried by two famous names and one very photogenic head of state. No advertising campaign buys that kind of reach, and none of it required exaggeration: the tennis was good, the crowd was happy and the pictures are real.
For the Coque crowd, though, the evening will be remembered less for the scoreline than for the scene at the end: the Grand Duke down on the court, both players either side of him, the banners of the arena above, and a small country enjoying the sight of world-class sport staged in its own front room. The Masters continues, Kerber marches on, and Luxembourg has added one more warm, unpretentious chapter to the story of its new reign.
Gerade einmal fuenf Spiele gab Kerber ab – fuenf!
