Grand Duchess Stephanie Opens ArtCity at Galerie Simoncini, and the Schoolchildren Steal the Show

A gallery opening with a difference took place in Luxembourg City on Wednesday. Grand Duchess Stephanie visited ArtCity at the Galerie Simoncini, the exhibition presenting the artists, artworks and publications of the Atelier Art, the art workshop of the Fondation Elysis, and she discovered the works alongside the people who created them.

Art from the heart of a care foundation

The Fondation Elysis is a name Luxembourg knows from the world of care, through its home in Kirchberg. Its Atelier Art is the foundation’s creative soul: a workshop where art is made, published and, with ArtCity, exhibited in one of the capital’s established galleries on Rue Notre-Dame. The Court called the presentation a unique glimpse of the atelier’s work and publications, and the Grand Duchess gave it the full attention it deserved, meeting the artists and taking in the pieces one by one.

Nobody should be surprised that she lingered. Stephanie has championed Luxembourg’s artists and artisans since her wedding, backing the makers and craftspeople of the Grand Duchy through patronage such as the De Mains de Maitres association. On this site, readers have just celebrated another royal with art in her blood, Queen Sonja unveiling her biggest ceramic pots yet in Oslo. Luxembourg’s Grand Duchess works the other side of the same passion: she finds other people’s art and walks it into the spotlight.

Questions from Sainte-Sophie

The heart-warming centre of the event was educational. Young pupils from the Ecole Sainte-Sophie put their own questions to the exhibition’s curators, who then presented the artworks in detail. It turned the opening into a conversation across generations: children asking, curators answering, and the artists of the Atelier Art watching their work do what art is supposed to do, start people talking.

Music carried the rest of the afternoon. Four musicians, Olga Volosenco, Olga Kozlova, Jennifer Lortie and Elena Reshetnikova, accompanied the event, and their presence turned a viewing into an occasion. Four performers, one school class, a room of new art and a Grand Duchess: as exhibition openings go, ArtCity had everything except stiffness.

The visit also completed a telling double for the new reign. The day before, the Grand Duchess was meeting a front-line Red Cross team at Luxembourg station. Gallery walls one day after station gates is a programme that says a great deal about how this court intends to work: everywhere in its own capital, at eye level, with the people who make the city run and the people who make it beautiful. Royal watchers have had grander scenes this week, including Crown Prince Christian at 21 in his scarlet gala portrait and Queen Sofia’s distinguished royal reception in Miami. Luxembourg’s answer was a small gallery, a care foundation’s artists, and a Grand Duchess entirely in her element.

There is one more quiet winner from Wednesday: the gallery itself. The Galerie Simoncini has shown generations of Luxembourgish and international artists, and ArtCity added a new kind of name to its walls, a foundation’s workshop exhibiting beside the professionals. That mixing is healthy for everyone. The Atelier artists gain a real audience and real standards. The gallery gains a story no commercial show can buy. And visitors gain the discovery that some of the most interesting art in the city this month was made not in a studio loft, but in a care foundation’s atelier, by people painting and printing because the making itself is a joy worth sharing.

For the Atelier Art artists, the day was the reward for the work itself. Their pieces now hang under the ArtCity banner at the Galerie Simoncini, seen by the Grand Duchess, questioned over by schoolchildren, and carried by the Court’s photographs to an audience far beyond Rue Notre-Dame. That is what an opening is for.
