Warner Bros. is taking Westeros to the cinema. Aegon’s Conquest, the first theatrical film set in the world of Game of Thrones, was announced at CinemaCon 2026 and later described in the studio’s Q2 shareholder letter as a theatrical event film on the slate beyond 2027.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
Television made the saga a Sunday-night ritual, and House of the Dragon showed that interest in House Targaryen remains strong. The studio now argues that this founding story needs a larger canvas – IMAX screens, full sound and an opening-weekend audience.
The idea has circulated for years. Variety reported in 2023 that HBO was developing Aegon’s Conquest as a possible series, perhaps paired with a feature. In 2024, Mattson Tomlin, a co-writer of The Batman, was attached before the direction changed. The decisive step came at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this past April, when Warner Bros. confirmed the working title in its 2027-and-beyond slate, and the August shareholder letter placed it alongside the next Matrix and Batman films – pointing to 2028 at the earliest. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms returns for a second season in 2027 in the meantime.
Beau Willimon is writing the screenplay. His background includes House of Cards and Andor, two series praised for treating politics and power as character drama – a fitting match for a story about how power is won and what it costs.
The underlying history comes from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. It follows Aegon I Targaryen with Visenya and Rhaenys and their dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes as seven quarrelling kingdoms are forged into one realm, the Iron Throne is created, King’s Landing is born, and Dorne refuses to kneel. No director or cast has been announced yet. Because the source history is finished, the film starts with a complete beginning, middle and end – and with one of the saga’s defining origin stories.
