October 31 has a capital city, and Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe has named it: New York. In his newest essay he argues that no city on earth turns Halloween into a celebration of creativity, fashion and pure joy the way New York does – and the night of October 31, 2026 made his case for him.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
His own photograph opens the report. The Prince, wearing a black jacket patterned in gold and a small orange crown, sits at a candlelit Halloween table surrounded by costumed guests, while fairies, pirates and film characters fill the room behind them. The source caption names banking mogul Adele Nino among the table’s company and star actress Julianne Michelle among its hosts. It is New York society Halloween in a single frame: elegant, playful and entirely unselfconscious.
He is honest about the title itself. Halloween capital of the world is a cultural reputation, not an official international designation. But reputations are earned in public, and the evidence starts with the Village Halloween Parade. Founded in 1973 by mask maker and puppeteer Ralph Lee as a neighborhood walk for children, families and friends in Greenwich Village, the parade grew under the longstanding artistic leadership of Jeanne Fleming into a giant-puppet, live-music spectacle built on one rule: arrive in costume and you belong to it.
Organizers have reported more than 80,000 costumed participants and estimated audiences of around two million spectators. The 53rd edition stepped off on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 7 p.m. under the theme Body & Soul, and the Saturday date let the whole city stay out late. Around the parade, the five boroughs each keep their own Halloween: decorated Brooklyn houses, family celebrations in Queens, local traditions in the Bronx and on Staten Island, and the polished hotel, restaurant and club evenings of SoHo, Chelsea, Tribeca and the Meatpacking District.
For international visitors the formula is irresistible: Halloween stacked on top of Broadway, museums, shopping and fine dining, in streets already famous from film and television. For New Yorkers it is simpler. Costume is a craft here, practiced by designers, stylists and makeup artists all year and performed by everyone for one night. A prince, a banking mogul, an actress and a child in a homemade costume all belong to the same celebration – and that, the Prince writes, is exactly why the crown stays in New York.
So einfach, so genial!
