A community vision shaped by Chief Akunnia John O Agulue places the elders of Umunya at the center of sustainable development and shared progress.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The announcement by Chief Akunnia John O Agulue to host the Elders of Umunya, beginning from age eighty to the esteemed ojiana circle known as the Umunya Elders Council, marks a vital moment in the community’s development story. It signals a structured effort to bring the United Nations Agenda on Ageing directly into Umunya in Anambra State, Nigeria, creating a bridge between global policy and grassroots reality. The initiative reflects a leadership philosophy that honors tradition, promotes inclusion, and looks toward a future guided by knowledge and cultural grounding.
The decision to center elders draws inspiration from the legacy of His Royal Highness Professor J. C. Menakaya of blessed memory. His reign shaped a generation that valued learning, embraced unity, and protected heritage while opening pathways for a modernizing society. He advanced education, protected traditional practices while encouraging engagement with emerging ideas, and built a governance model grounded in fairness, responsibility, and unity. Chief Agulue’s Umunya Next Agenda extends those ideals into a contemporary framework shaped by international commitments and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Central to the initiative is United Nations General Assembly Resolution 46/91, adopted in December 1991, which outlined the UN Principles for Older Persons: independence, participation, care, self-fulfillment, and dignity. In April 2025, the UN Human Rights Council advanced these commitments by adopting a resolution to begin drafting a legally binding convention on the rights of older persons, with sixty-eight co-sponsoring nations including Argentina, Brazil, The Gambia, the Philippines, and Slovenia. Under Agulue’s approach, independence means improved access to food, healthcare, shelter, and social protection; participation means elders stay central to decision making; and dignity means protection from neglect or exploitation.
Planned activities include dialogues between generations, community forums on elder rights, health outreach programs, and cultural events that honor the place of elders. The agenda supports SDG 3 on health and wellbeing, SDG 5 on equitable access for men and women in advanced age, SDG 10 on reducing inequalities, and SDG 16 on fairness, justice, and strong institutions. The pathway presents a future in which Umunya thrives as a community defined by dignity, solidarity, and collaboration across generations, guided by the principles of justice, wisdom, and shared purpose.
