Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Rizzutos Honored at Columbus Day Mass in New York

Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Rizzutos Honored at Columbus Day Mass in New York

New York knows how to turn a Monday in October into a celebration of roots. On October 12, 2026, the city marked Columbus Day with its parade on Fifth Avenue and with the 49th Annual Columbus Day Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and at the heart of both stood two guests who drew warm attention all day: Ambassador Leandro Rizzuto and his wife Denise, of Palm Beach.

The Rizzutos are close friends of this writer, and their presence was not ceremonial in the stiff sense. People know them for steady work across diplomacy, business, charity and family life, and for showing up. On Columbus Day they showed up for New York’s Italian American community, and the Mass program recognized Ambassador Rizzuto as an honoree, alongside Dr. Evelyn C. Granieri. The parade itself was led by Grand Marshal Raymond T. Dalio.

A morning of faith at St. Patrick’s

Before the bands and banners took over Fifth Avenue, the cathedral offered the quieter half of the day. Timothy Cardinal Dolan celebrated the Mass, Archbishop Charles D. Balvo served as homilist, and Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks contributed a welcoming message honoring Italian heritage and faith. Inside St. Patrick’s, with its high arches and sacred music, the tone was gratitude – for family, for memory, and for the generations of Italian Americans who helped build this country.

The music carried its own story. The Liceo Pertini Vocal Ensemble traveled from Genoa, led by conductor Luca Franco Ferrari, and tenor Luciano Lamonarca, cantor Salvatore Diana and the St. Patrick’s Cathedral Choir were also part of the program. Readers Maria Concetta Moschella, Victor Anderson Jr., Daniel D’Allara, Frank Gibbs and Grace Rose gave the readings, while a team of altar servers assisted at the altar. The cathedral staff and ushers, the Very Reverend Enrique F. Salvo, Monsignor Thomas P. Sandi, Deacon Anthony Mammoliti and Columbus Citizens Foundation liaison Domenick Schinco all received thanks in the program.

Why the Rizzutos fit this day

Some honors land on people because of a title. This one landed because of a pattern. Leandro and Denise Rizzuto support children’s causes with a consistency their friends can set a calendar by – we work together in support of kids charities, including A Heaven For Newborns, which protects babies. Denise appeared at the celebration alongside Erika Rizzuto, and the family presence underlined the point of the day: heritage is not an abstract word when the people honoring it bring their own families with them.

That mix – public service, business life, charity work and family – is also why the Columbus Day setting suited them. The celebration is, at its core, a family story told at city scale: grandparents who crossed an ocean, parents who built a life, children who now march, sing and read at the altar. A couple who treat philanthropy as a family habit belongs in that picture.

New York’s recent calendar has been full of evenings built on the same idea. A Manhattan gala for Filipino students showed how one night of giving can open classroom doors, and the city’s connectors keep proving that generosity travels well between communities, as Gloria T. Cressler’s work connecting New York’s philanthropic circles recently showed.

The foundation behind the celebration

Behind the parade and the Mass stands the Columbus Citizens Foundation, whose leaders and supporters work to keep Italian American traditions alive while backing educational opportunity. Its board officers are Jason DeSena Trennert as Chair, Christopher Loiacono as President, Anthony F. Giordano as Vice President, Patricia D. Manzo as Secretary and Lawrence E. Auriana as Treasurer, with Executive Director Carmen Damian Hacker running the operation. The program also recognized a long bench of governors, among them Maria S. Bartiromo, Ralph Della Cava, Frank G. Fusaro, Anthony F. Massaro, Salvatore M. Salibello and Dr. Thomas P. Sculco.

The Women of CCF were represented by Chair Annalisa Perfetto, Vice Chair Dana Romita and Secretary Eileen Tarantino, and the Young Adults Auxiliary by President Teresa Mandile and Vice President Jon Ross Saia. It is easy to print a program. It is harder to fill one with people who volunteer year after year, and this foundation clearly manages both.

What lingers after the parade passes

By afternoon, Fifth Avenue belonged to the crowds again. What stays with you from a day like this is not the order of marchers but the chain of hands behind it – honorees, clergy, singers, readers, ushers, volunteers and foundation officers all pulling in the same direction. Faith and heritage also framed a very different recent gathering, where Pope Leo XIV spoke in St Peter’s Square about human dignity as a gift.

For Leandro and Denise Rizzuto, October 12 was one more entry in a long record of standing with good causes and good people. New York noticed. The honor in the Mass program was printed in ink, but the real recognition was simpler: a cathedral full of people who were glad they came.

EHRENSACHE IN NEW YORK: RIZZUTOS STRAHLEN IN DER ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL!

Was für ein Tag in New York!
