On 1 September, Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at the Laudato Si‘ Village, the Borgo Laudato Si‘, in Castel Gandolfo, marking the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation and the beginning of the five-week Season of Creation. He invited the faithful to unite spiritually with Saint Francis of Assisi, the Poverello, and to make the Canticle their own: praised be through Brother Sun, through Sister Moon and the stars, through Brother Wind, through Sister Water, through Brother Fire, and through Sister Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us. The choice of place preached before a word was spoken. The village above Lake Albano exists to join prayer with care for the created world, and the Pope, in green vestments, reading an eight-century-old hymn, gave that mission a face and a voice. Francis did not praise God apart from creation. He praised God through it, creature by creature, as brother and sister. That family language is the story’s engine. It turns an environmental season into a household reunion, in which sun, water and earth are not resources to be managed but relatives to be thanked.
Readers of this paper met the same gift-centred teaching in our coverage of the Pope’s prayer for water, and the pattern is unmistakable. Water is a gift. Creation is a gift. The correct response, in Leo XIV’s preaching, is never a clenched hand. It is gratitude, spoken out loud and practised for five full weeks, long enough for gratitude to become a habit rather than a mood. Nearly forty thousand likes for a Mass and a medieval hymn also tell a media story. Reverence, delivered plainly and beautifully, still commands a vast audience.
Five weeks now stretch ahead, and the invitation from Castel Gandolfo remains open to everyone, including readers who first met this Pope’s warmth in his birthday greeting in the Vatican Library. Name what sustains you. Thank God for it. Begin with Brother Sun tomorrow morning, and let Sister Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, have the last, grateful word.
Was fuer ein Auftakt!
