When people think of the Amalfi Coast, they immediately picture the colorful, steep hillsides of Positano or the bustling activity on the piazza in Amalfi. These are images that travel through social media millions of times—perfectly staged, often heavy on the filters. But what happens when the reality catches up with the hype? When you long for the true dolce vita, away from mass tourism?
As an Italian—shaped by the stories and heritage of my parents and grandparents—I know Italy well. Very well, in fact. And that is exactly why, this time, I was drawn to a place that has achieved what many neighboring villages have failed to do: it has preserved its soul. My destination: Praiano. A small village 10 minutes from Positano.
Nestled like a well-kept secret, Praiano lies right between the two tourist magnets of Positano and Amalfi. Yet, while the world often just rushes past Praiano on the coastal road, a first-class, picture-perfect backdrop reveals itself to anyone who stops here.
Here, life is perched high on the cliffs. The view from the countless vantage points isn’t just beautiful—it is breathtaking. It leaves you speechless. It’s the kind of scenery that forces you to put down your smartphone and just look. Hour after hour. The deep blue of the sea merges with the sky on the horizon, while the waves gently lap against the rocks far below.
For my stay, I chose Hotel La Perla, a very family-run 4-star hotel that perfectly reflects the spirit of the village. Even at breakfast, you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the vast, sparkling sea before the day has even properly begun. When it comes to hospitality, the hotel captivates with a warmth that is second to none; it is an oasis of calm, offering an incredibly relaxing atmosphere where you instantly feel at home.
A particular advantage of the hotel is its location: via the typical steps so famous for the Amalfi Coast, you can walk directly from the hotel down to the Marina di Praia. This tiny, romantic cove is nestled between steep rock faces. Once at the bottom, a charming little stretch of beach awaits, where many colorful boats lie at anchor. In addition, several excellent restaurants and bars invite you to linger right by the water. If you want to explore the coast from here, it couldn’t be easier: the Marina is an ideal hub for effortlessly taking a water taxi to Positano or Amalfi.
Anyone wishing to spend a day by the sea on the Amalfi Coast should know one thing: you will look for classic, expansive sandy beaches almost in vain. There are only a few larger stretches of beach, such as the main beach in Positano. However, that is exactly the place I would personally avoid. Due to the constant arrival of ferries and the many boats cruising around, it is simply not a place to relax.
The true magic of swimming reveals itself quite differently here: on the cliffs and rocks. Countless exclusive beach clubs are hidden along the coast, spectacularly built into the cliffs. The experience is often perfectly organized: many of these clubs offer an exclusive package. If you reserve a sun lounger or have lunch at the accompanying restaurant, a hotel-owned boat taxi service is often included. You are picked up completely relaxed at the pier, glide across the deep blue water, and reach the swimming oasis on the rocks by sea, far away from the hustle and bustle. That is pure lifestyle!
The Absolute Highlight:
If you want to experience the sea even more intensely, I highly recommend my absolute highlight of the trip: a private boat tour with Valentine’s Boat Rent „Experiences“. What makes this experiences so special is the perfection in every detail, completely organized to the minute by the owner, Tiziana.
The exclusive adventure begins at the port of Positano. Right on time, you are picked up by a smaller shuttle boat and elegantly guided to the main boat. On board, a well-rehearsed, wonderful crew awaits: Tiziana’s husband, Giuseppe, guides the boat as an experienced captain, while a fantastic skipper takes wonderful care of the guests‘ well-being. He passionately and charmingly explains every unique feature that passes by on the shore. Together, the trio offers a service better than you could ever imagine.
The tour takes you past majestic backdrops. The crew makes swimming stops in hidden coves with crystal-clear water and heads for mystical sea caves, which you can even steer into—provided the sea is calm enough. An absolutely magical sight from the water is the famous Furore Fjord, which looks like a mysterious, steep gash in the rocks. Later, you glide past the magnificent villas of high society, including the former holiday home of film icon Sophia Loren.
Upon request, the crew can also organize an exclusive lunch on land. I opted for a charming, beachfront restaurant in Conca dei Marini. With my feet almost in the sand and the sound of the waves in the background, I was served a fish that allows me to say with absolute certainty: I have never eaten better fish in my entire life.
My Conclusion…
When the sun finally sinks behind the rocks, it becomes clear that this journey needs both sides: Positano, which thrills us with its glamorous energy, and Praiano, whose gentle whisper grounds us. It is only in this interplay between the grand stage and the hidden idyll that the Amalfi Coast unfolds its full splendor.
