Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Superman and Lex Luthor Team Up in Man of Tomorrow

James Gunn confirmed it himself on October 4: the assembly cut of Man of Tomorrow is finished. He posted the update on Threads, mentioned in passing that he is already writing his next movie, and went back to running DC Studios. The man directed this film, is supervising its edit, and still has pages to write. Somewhere in there he presumably sleeps. The Superman sequel lands in theaters on July 9, 2027, and everything about the production says it is moving at real speed: filming wrapped in August after 93 shooting days, and the raw shape of the film now exists in the edit bay.

Here is the detail that will sell the tickets. Superman is forced to team up with Lex Luthor to stop Brainiac. Sit with that for a second. David Corenswet plays Superman as warm and earnest, a hero who believes in people. Nicholas Hoult plays Luthor as a wounded genius who believes he is the hero of his own story. Putting those two in the same foxhole is not a plot device. It is a character engine: two people who cannot stand each other, forced to need each other.

The threat that forces the issue is Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger, the cold collector of worlds from the comics. Some villains you can punch. Brainiac is the kind you have to outthink, and that makes Luthor’s brain the most valuable weapon in the room. Gunn has always loved an uneasy alliance, from his scrappy outsiders to his reluctant teams, and this might be his best one yet. The friction writes itself: ideology, ego, method, and underneath it all the question of whether Luthor will stay on the right side of the fight.

The cast around that central tension is deep. Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock steps in as Supergirl, and Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart. Adria Arjona joins as Maxima, with Skyler Gisondo, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, and Sara Sampaio filling out the roster. That is a lot of firepower for one film, and it tells you what Gunn is building. Man of Tomorrow is not a small sequel. It is the movie where the DCU starts to feel like a universe, with heroes crossing paths and storylines braiding together. Compare that to the DC landscape right now: The Batman Part II pausing production, and Gunn’s machine, by contrast, keeps humming.

Gunn’s pace is the DCU’s real superpower

There is something almost absurd about the man. He co-runs DC Studios. He wrote and directed this film. He is overseeing the edit. And he is already pages into the next script, which he has not named and which we will not guess at. Most directors would take a vacation after 93 shooting days. Gunn takes a blank document.

That energy is the universe’s real engine. Shared universes work when there is a clear creative voice at the top, and Gunn has spent two years proving he is exactly that. The assembly cut milestone matters because it is the point where a film stops being a plan and starts being a movie. Everything from here is refinement: pacing, performance, music, the thousand small decisions that turn footage into feeling.

Summer 2027 is shaping up as a heavyweight season, and a Superman who has to trust Lex Luthor is a hell of a flag to plant. Big-screen stories are finding their audiences everywhere these days, as Spielberg’s Disclosure Day topping the streaming charts demonstrated. But some movies demand the biggest screen you can find, and a Superman-versus-Brainiac showdown with Luthor caught in the middle is exactly that kind of movie. July 9, 2027. Mark it.

Superman und Luthor Hand in Hand! Der Wahnsinns-Plan hinter dem Mega-Film

IRRE!

Brainiac muss man ÜBERLISTEN.

9. Juli 2027. Vormerken!
