Deforestation alerts in the Amazon have fallen to their lowest level in 13 years, according to Brazilian satellite monitoring data. Between August 2025 and July 2026, alerts covered just 2,874 square kilometers – a 36 percent drop from the previous year and more than 55 percent below the average of the prior decade, an area slightly smaller than Rhode Island in a rainforest spanning eight countries.
A Story by Award Winning Managing Editor His Highness Dr. Prince Mario-Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe.
The figures come from DETER, Brazil’s near-real-time detection system run by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The 2,874 square kilometers is the lowest figure since the current DETER series began in 2016, and going further back with an older system, alerts were last lower in 2013 at 2,766 square kilometers. The higher-resolution PRODES system recorded 5,796 square kilometers for the year ending July 2025 – the lowest in eleven years and roughly half the 11,594 recorded in 2022 – with final figures for the year ending July 2026 expected later this autumn.
The Amazon stores vast quantities of carbon, generates the atmospheric moisture flows known as flying rivers that carry rain across South America, and shelters around 10 percent of all known species. Specialists point to converging forces behind the decline: near-real-time satellite detection that lets enforcement teams respond within days, increased patrolling and stricter penalties, conservation finance that lets a living forest generate revenue as a carbon asset, and protected areas that have kept deforestation near zero. Falling clearing was also reported across Brazil’s other biomes – the Cerrado, Caatinga, Atlantic Forest and Pampa.
The article keeps an honest caveat: the Amazon is not saved, deforestation continues, and forest degradation that does not show up as clear-cutting remains a major under-counted threat. But a sustained multi-year decline shows that forest loss responds to monitoring and conservation within years – a lesson that applies directly to the Congo Basin and Southeast Asia, and proof that protecting forests remains among the most cost-effective ways to cut emissions.
