Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Monday, September 28, the second model in its Claude 5.5 family, six days after the flagship Opus 5.5 launched on September 22. Sonnet is positioned as the everyday workhorse most developers and businesses will run at volume.

Pricing is unchanged from Sonnet 5: $2 per million input tokens, $10 per million output tokens and $0.20 per million cache reads. Anthropic says the new model needs far fewer tokens for the same work, costs up to 30 percent less for most work, and generates output more than 30 percent faster than its predecessor.

On Terminal-Bench 4.0, an agentic coding evaluation, Sonnet 5.5 scored 70.6 percent, compared with 10.3 percent for Sonnet 5 and ahead of Opus 5.5’s 66.4 percent at its highest effort setting, according to the article. It also improved on CursorBench and FrontierCode, and it is the first Sonnet model to launch with frontier-grade cybersecurity safeguards, while its biology safeguards remain unchanged from Sonnet 5.

The 5.5 ladder is Opus 5.5 for the hardest reasoning and coding at $4 input and $20 output per million tokens, Sonnet 5.5 in the middle, and Haiku 5.5, a lightweight model due in the coming weeks. Sonnet 5.5 is available on day one on the Claude Developer Platform (model ID claude-sonnet-5-5), AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
