On 11 July 2019, pop icon Christina Aguilera will be coming to Berlin for an exclusive concert. The 38-year-old New York-born Aguilera’s fans had to wait more than twelve years before she could finally go on tour again. Now she returns to the big stage with her current album „Liberation“.
The career of the represents a prime example of someone who pursues with all his might his goal to reach the very top. When she entered the spotlight of the international music business for the first time in 1998, only American compatriots knew that the petite blonde had been a spotlight pro since she was a child.
Christina Maria Aguilera was born on December 18, 1980 in Staten Island in New York as the daughter of Fausto Aguilera, an Ecuadorian immigrant, and the Irish stocky Shelly Fidler. Her mother, once a violinist who travelled the country with orchestras in her youth and her father was a marching musician in the military, so the family was hardly in one place for a long time and moved from Staten Island to Texas, back to the North (New Jersey) and finally to Japan.
In 1986 the marriage broke up and mother Shelly moved back to her birthplace Wexford, a sad suburb of the steel metropolis Pittsburgh. Her career as a performer begins at the age of eight, when the victory at the casting show Star Search just misses her. This spurs Christina Maria on, she trains her voice and between 1991 and 1993 she manages to sing the American national anthem at the professional clubs of the local Steelers (football) and Penguins (ice hockey). The next career step is the New Mickey Mouse Club. In addition to Justin Timberlake and Joshua Chasez, who later break the hearts of the girls with N’Sync, there is also a certain Britney Spears as a children’s presenter with Christina in the studio. For two years Mickey, Goofy, Donald and Co. are her companions. After the Mickey Mouse Club was closed, manager Steve Kurtz signed her, but at the age of 11 they all thought she was still too young for a music career. In 1993, the longed-for call comes from the Disney camp. The Disney Club refers her to an agent of the label RCA, who is currently looking for a female voice. Her self-titled debut will be released in mid-August 1999. The resulting „Genie In A Bottle“ goes to the top of the billboard charts with a lascivious music video.
In 1999, she secured the title Best New Artist at the 42nd Grammy Awards and Britney Spears gets nothing. Other highlights of the same year are appearances at the halftime show of the Superbowl and before President Bill Clinton. 2000 she goes on world tour (Support-Act: Destiny’s Child). One year later she received her second Grammy in the category Latin Female Pop Vocal Album. 2001 is also the year in which Christina undergoes an image change. For the soundtrack to the blockbuster Moulin Rouge she contributes the cover version of „Lady Marmalade“ together with Missy Elliott, Pink, Mya and Lil‘ Kim. In 2002, the 21-year-old returns to the scene with the album „Stripped“. The blonde pop starlet has developed into a lascivious vamp. In the video for the single „Dirrty“ she also shows herself and causes a little moral scandal with a rather harmless strip. The song, which is supposed to educate girls to more self-confidence, is called „Beautiful“. It carries the message „You are beautiful, no matter who you are“, for which she collects her third Grammy. In 2004 Christina sings together with Missy Elliott the Rose Royce classic „Car Wash“ for the soundtrack of „Shark Tale“. She contributes the previously unreleased song „Hello“ to Mercedes‘ new A-Class spot, „Beautiful“ on the DVD „Stripped: Live In The U.K.“ and invites the girls in the audience to do what they really want more often. Aguilera also explains in the interviews included that it is important for her to stand up for charity organisations.
Christina Aguilera dedicates the album „Bionic“ to her son: „You were the ultimate inspiration, the greatest gift of my life. Without you there wouldn’t have been all that creativity.“ Let someone once again say that baby and career can’t be reconciled.
But the family idyll doesn’t last very long: At the end of 2010 Christina separates from her husband Jordan Bratman, shortly after the divorce follows. The new one at her side is not long in coming, it is Matthew Rutler, whom the musician meets on the set of „Burlesque“. In it she plays the small-town waitress Ali Rose, Christina’s first role on the big screen. Together with Cher, she also contributes the soundtrack, which is nominated for the Golden Globes. In the following months, the singer has to take a lot of malice for her lyric slip at the national anthem and her weight fluctuations. Maybe that’s the reason why she will turn to other projects in spring 2011, like the jury job at the first season of the American casting show ‚The Voice‘. In addition to Cee-Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, she also supervises and evaluates up-and-coming stereotypes.
The show becomes a huge TV success and gives the singer another hit single with a feature on Maroon 5’s „Moves Like Jagger“ in 2011. The singer’s private life is even better, she is pregnant a second time and will give birth to a little daughter in August 2014. She and her fiancé Matt christen Kleine Summer Rain in Hollywood style.
A whole six seasons of ‚The Voice‘ later, Christina’s candidate wins for the first time, making her the first female coach to succeed. Otherwise she dedicates herself to her role in the US soap ‚Nashville‘ and her own perfume line, which follows the first fragrance ‚Xpose‘. Musically she takes a break and only returns in 2018 with the single „Accelerate“ and her sixth studio album „Liberation“. With the pre-release she is more oriented to the trap scene, but of course she still keeps her tube voice and lascivious videos.
In spite of the repeated announcements of musical reinvention, Christina remains true to herself, no wonder, after all, it took her a lot of work to build up her brand image. She says: „You can take it or leave it, but I’m not going to change, not for anyone.“
